On the 30th of April 1999, David Copeland- a hardcore right wing extremist, targeted London’s Gay community in a motiveless homophobic attack. His home made nail bomb was planted inside the Admiral Duncan pub at the start of a bank holiday weekend, and the pub was filled with customers relaxing. The blast killed 3 and injured dozens more in this horrific and despicable act. Mr Copeland was given six life sentences was told by the judge ” The public must be protected from you, and assured that if you are released that it wont be for a very long time”.

Rest in peace to Andrea Dykes, 27, who was 4 month’s pregnant at the time, Nick Moore, 31, and John Light, 32. The event was recently marked by a memorial service carried out the the St Anne’s Church Yard London, on the 9th anniversary of the tragedy.

On the 9th march 2008, Rosie ‘Roh’ Wright was killed in a collision with a lorry at just 26 years of age. The tragic event took place at the so called “Roulette Junction” between Pentonville Road and Penton Rise. Ms Wright was the in the middle lane going straight forward when a lorry in the outside lane turned left into Penton Rise, crushing her underneath. In an investigation into the junction, the police recorded 23 incidents at the junction within a 3 year period and calls from Local MP’s are to increase the safety for cyclists with the introduction of speed camera’s and more prominent signage.

On the 7th of July 2005, London’s transport network was the victim of a terror attack which saw tube trains and a bus blown up in the morning rush hour. We visited Tavistock Square to pay our respects.

On the 15th of April 1989, 96 football fans were crushed to death during an FA semi final cup tie. The match between Liverpool FC and Nottingham Forest, held at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough stadium, was abandonned 6 minutes into the first half. The disaster occured because of fans arriving late and pushing through the turnstiles, causing fans at the front of the stand to be crushed.

Michael Harrison, age 21 of Liverpool, was struck from his bike in a vicious and un-provoked attack on the 6th of July 2007. He was left with internal bleeding and he passed away in hospital with his family by his bedside 5 days later. Michael or ‘Haro’ as he was known to his friends was a very keen traveller and street artist who had made friends the world over.

In the early hours of the 21st of May, a fire swept through the worlds oldest tea clipping ship. Located in Grenwich, South East London, the vessel was named after a quote from the Robert Burns tale “Tam O’ Shanter”. The site is currently being restored.

Camden Market Fire

On the 9th February 2008, a fire which started in the Hawley Arms Pub, burned a part of North London to the ground. Flames of up to 30 meter’s high destroyed Camden’s market and drastically changed the lives of up 300 stall owners and workers. The blaze took place on Chalk Farm Road and was fought by nearly 100 fire fighters until it was brought under control.

On the 25th of November, 1944, ‘Woolworths’ in New Cross was hit by a German V2 rocket. The devastating blast killed 168 people inside the building. The explosion brought surrounding buildings down, killing hundreds more. A bus and an army lorry were both turned over and the passengers of both were killed. In the site there is a plaque in memory of those that were lost.
